Ernest Edgar Pegg was born in Saxon Street in 1891 (Newmarket Q4-1891 3B:517), son of Edgar and Jane Maria PEGG (née WOOLLARD).

1901 census...Aged 9, he was at Chapel Row, Ashley with his father Edgar PEGG [37] a wheelwright born Saxon Street; his mother Jane [35] born Kirtling; brothers Harry [11] born Saxon Street and John [8 months] born Cheveley and sisters Ellen [8] born Saxon Street and Elizabeth [4] born Cheveley.

1911 census...Aged 19, general labourer, he was at Ashley with his parents, brothers Harry (general labourer) and John (now recorded as born in Ashley) and sister Ellen and sister Ethel [5] born Ashley.

The pension card records his mother's address as 4 Mill Road, Ashley.

He enlisted in Newmarket.
He died in Netley Royal Victoria Military Hospital near Southampton. Without his Army records we cannot be exact, but it seems very likely he was wounded during the early days of the Somme offensive which started on 1st July 1916. The 11th Battalion, the Suffolk Regiment suffered more casualties than any other battalion in that battle.
